The
San Antonio
Junior Golf Foundation
Hello, my name is Larry
Whitfield, I am the President of The San Antonio Junior
Golf Foundation (SAJGF).
When the SAJGF
was first started in February 2000, we figured maybe 20 or 30 kids might join.
As of today we have over 1000 kids signed up in the program.
The sole charter of
San
Antonio Junior Golf Foundation is to give back to the community.
All we ask of the juniors is once they grow up, don't forget while they got your
start and give back to your community. It doesn't matter where they
live, just give something back to the community.
We are offering free
lessons, free equipment,
and the use of some of San
Antonio’s Premiers golf courses - Pecan Valley Golf Club, Willowsprings, and
Woodlake Country Club.
The San Antonio Junior Golf Foundation is a proud member of the Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce, Greater
San Antonio Chamber of Commerce,, and also serve on
the Golf Advisory Sub-Committee for San Antonio Parks and Recreation. We
are affiliated with the Texas State Golf Association whom take pride in working
with the youth in the community.
I grew up on the eastside of San Antonio, attended Dorie Miller Elementary, Gates Elementary, Portwood Junior High, and graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1973. I went back to school in 1985, at St Phillips College for a two year Associate degree in Restaurant Management. I started playing golf in 1990 and volunteered for different junior golf programs located on the eastside of San Antonio. The Eastside Junior Golf Program at Willowsprings Golf Course, The Carlos Clark Unique Golf Association, and The San Antonio Junior Golf Association, and assisted with several tournaments here in the community. Two young men, Anthony Flowers and Calvin Troy Ussery . taught me how to play baseball at Lincoln Park, back in 1960's. As a child I was not given the opportunity to participate in a program such as the SAJGF, therefore this creates an opportunity for me to give back to my community.
I've worked at Springsdale Cleaners from the age of 6 to 18. From there I went to work at the Argyle Club as a dishwasher, then promoted to busboy, cook, pantry, baker, receiving clerk, Sous Chef and then Executive Chef in 1977 thru 1993. From there I went to work for some cash register and sales companies, selling and trouble shooting Point of Sales Systems (computer base point of sales system). Then I started a small computer repair service and networking company.
